Scenes from a Floating World
I have been increasingly drawn to photographing still life arrangements over the past few years. This began at a residency in the northern New England woods, in an impulse to transition away from photographing the landscape yet still represent it somehow. I fell in love with the suggestive power of sticks and leaves. Weeds collected on a walk offered limitless possibilities to play with form, tone, and space. I also try to approach the ineffable qualities of the places from which they came. By creating imaginary spaces which sometimes utilize drawing, painting, and multiple exposures, these small, constructed worlds give me license to move from the literal to the ephemeral.
